Introduction
Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park is Catalonia's only national park and protects a high Pyrenean landscape of glacial lakes, granite ridges, black pine forests, waterfalls, and mountain refuges. The park is split between major access areas such as Boí and Espot, with classic views around Sant Maurici, Els Encantats, Aigüestortes, and the high lake basins.
For broader background, see the Aigüestortes i Estany de Sant Maurici National Park Wikipedia page.
Top Hikes
These three hikes are good starting points for planning, with at least one more difficult option. Distances and elevation gain are rounded; check the official park trail page for current closures, permits, weather, and trail conditions.
Planell d'Aigüestortes to Estany Llong (moderate) - 6.8 miles (11.0 km); elevation gain about 1,150 feet (350 m). A classic lake-and-forest route through the Aigüestortes sector toward Estany Llong, with granite peaks and high-mountain water scenery.
Estany de Sant Maurici to Amitges (difficult) - 8.7 miles (14.0 km); elevation gain about 2,300 feet (700 m). A demanding high-lake route from Sant Maurici toward Refugi d'Amitges, with Encantats views and exposed mountain weather.
Colomèrs Lakes Circuit (difficult) - 7.5 miles (12.0 km); elevation gain about 2,000 feet (610 m). A popular high-mountain lake circuit in the Colomèrs area with repeated climbs, rocky terrain, and broad Pyrenees scenery.
Webcams and Access
The official Catalonia Natural Parks webcam page lists cameras from refuges and towns in and around the park. These views are useful for checking snow cover, cloud level, and visibility before choosing a route from Boí, Espot, Sant Maurici, Colomèrs, Amitges, or nearby valleys.
Mountain Safety
Weather in the Catalan Pyrenees can change quickly. Carry appropriate layers, navigation, water, and sun protection, and be ready to turn around if storms, snow, or visibility make high routes unsafe.
