Introduction
Arenal Volcano National Park protects the lava-flow, rainforest, and volcanic landscape around one of Costa Rica's most recognizable volcanoes. The park sits near La Fortuna and Lake Arenal, where visitors come for volcano views, forest trails, wildlife, hot springs, waterfalls, and scenic drives.
The live camera on this page is provided by Arenal Observatory Lodge and EarthCam from the La Fortuna / Arenal area. It is useful for checking cloud cover, rainfall, and whether the volcano is visible before choosing a trail, viewpoint, or driving plan.
For official park information, use SINAC. For broader visitor planning, use Visit Costa Rica and local operator information, then confirm current weather, trail access, and road conditions close to your visit.
Trails and Volcano Viewing
Popular Arenal activities include short forest walks, lava-flow viewpoints, hanging bridges in the broader Arenal area, birding, wildlife watching, and scenic stops around Lake Arenal. Trails can be muddy during rainy periods, and views of the cone can change from clear to hidden in minutes.
The volcano is usually admired from designated viewpoints and nearby trails rather than climbed. Stay on marked routes, respect closures, and follow official guidance around volcanic terrain, wildlife, and private-property boundaries.
Access and Nearby Areas
La Fortuna is the main visitor base for Arenal Volcano National Park. Many visitors combine the park with La Fortuna Waterfall, hot springs, Lake Arenal, Mistico Hanging Bridges, or the Arenal Observatory Lodge trail network.
Road travel from San José, Liberia, Monteverde, or the Caribbean side can take longer than the map suggests because of mountain roads, rain, traffic, and stops. Check the live camera and forecast before committing to a view-dependent plan.
Weather
Arenal is humid and green for a reason. The drier season from December through April often gives better odds for volcano views, but clouds and showers are possible in any month. Green season can be lush and quieter, with rain more likely in the afternoon.
