Introduction
Cradle Mountain-Lake St Clair National Park protects alpine lakes, glacial valleys, ancient rainforest, buttongrass moorland, dolerite peaks, and part of the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. The Cradle Mountain area is known for Dove Lake, Waldheim, the Overland Track, wombats, alpine plants, and fast-changing highland weather.

Top Hikes
Cradle Summit is the difficult route to include. Tasmania Parks lists it as 8 hrs return, 12.8 km / 8.0 mi, with about 600 m / 1,970 ft of elevation gain. It is Grade 5 and includes large rocks, exposure, and alpine weather.
Dove Lake Circuit is the classic introductory walk with iconic mountain views. Tasmania Parks lists it as 2-3 hrs, 6 km / 3.7 mi circuit, Grade 3, with forest sections and open views across Dove Lake.
Crater Lake is a strong shorter alpine-lake option when the summit is not suitable. Tasmania Parks lists it as 2 hrs, 5.7 km / 3.5 mi circuit, Grade 3, through a series of alpine lake landscapes.
Camping and Lodging
Tasmania Parks lists Waldheim Cabins as the in-park overnight accommodation at Cradle Mountain, with other private lodges and campgrounds outside the park gateway. The Overland Track has separate booking and seasonal requirements, and the Cradle Mountain shuttle has its own fee.
Weather and Road Conditions
Cradle Mountain has alpine weather. Cloud, rain, wind, snow, ice, and low visibility can arrive quickly, even outside winter. Check the webcam, forecast, road status, shuttle status, and official track information before choosing a walk.
Getting Around - Transportation
The Cradle Mountain visitor centre and shuttle system manage access toward Dove Lake during shuttle operating periods. Private vehicle access can be restricted when shuttles are running, and visitors should check current Tasmania Parks shuttle information before arriving.
