Introduction
Nelson Lakes National Park protects the northern end of New Zealand's Southern Alps, with Lake Rotoiti, Lake Rotoroa, beech forest, alpine basins, sharp ridgelines, and multi-day tramping routes. St Arnaud and the DOC Rotoiti / Nelson Lakes Visitor Centre are the main gateways for checking conditions, hut bookings, maps, and safety advice.
For broader background on the park's lakes, mountains, and protected landscape, see the Nelson Lakes National Park Wikipedia page. For official alerts, tracks, huts, campsites, and visitor guidance, use the Nelson Lakes National Park official DOC site.
The Angelus Basin Mountain Station is operated by the NZ Mountain Safety Council with Envirolapse. It provides live mountain camera imagery and weather data around Angelus Hut, Robert Ridge, Speargrass Creek, and Rotomaninitua / Lake Angelus.
Top Hikes
Mount Robert Circuit is the best day-hike introduction to Nelson Lakes. DOC lists it as a 9 km / 5.6 mi loop taking about 5 hours. Elevation gain is approximately 550 m / 1,800 ft, with big views over Lake Rotoiti and access toward Bushline Hut and Robert Ridge.
Angelus Hut via Pinchgut Track and Robert Ridge Route is the signature difficult alpine route. DOC lists it as 12.2 km / 7.6 mi one way and about 6 hours. The route climbs from roughly 880 m / 2,887 ft at Mt Robert car park to ridge terrain near 1,800 m / 5,906 ft, so plan for about 900 m / 2,950 ft of gain plus exposed ridge travel.
Travers-Sabine Circuit is the major multi-day tramp. DOC lists it as an 80 km / 49.7 mi loop over 4-7 days, with advanced tramping through beech forest, river valleys, tussock, and 2,000 m / 6,562 ft mountains. DOC does not publish one total elevation-gain number; independent track logs commonly put total gain near 3,100 m / 10,170 ft.
Camping and Lodging
Nelson Lakes has DOC huts and campsites rather than large in-park hotels. Angelus Hut sits at 1,650 m / 5,413 ft beside Rotomaninitua / Lake Angelus and requires bookings all year, along with the nearby campsite. Lakehead Hut and Bushline Hut are useful options for shorter overnight trips, while longer routes use the park's backcountry hut network.
St Arnaud, near Lake Rotoiti, is the main base for lodging, food, visitor services, and trip staging. Check DOC hut and campsite booking rules, seasonal facilities, water availability, weather, avalanche risk, and transport before leaving town.
Weather and Road Conditions
Nelson Lakes weather can shift rapidly from calm lake conditions to snow, ice, high wind, and whiteout on the ridges. From May to October, DOC warns of snow, ice, avalanche risk, sub-zero temperatures, and reduced facilities on Angelus routes. Use the Angelus Basin camera, NZ Mountain Safety Council guidance, DOC alerts, and local forecasts together.
Getting Around - Transportation
Most visitors enter through St Arnaud and Lake Rotoiti. Mt Robert car park is the usual access point for Mount Robert Circuit and the Robert Ridge route to Angelus Hut. Water taxis can help with some Lake Rotoiti access, including trips toward Lakehead Hut, but schedules and availability should be confirmed locally.
Webcam Notes
The Nelson Lakes webcam card uses the current Angelus Basin Mountain Station image from NZ Mountain Safety Council and Envirolapse. Remote alpine cameras can be unavailable or inconsistent because of weather, power, communications, snow, or maintenance.
