Introduction
Swiss National Park is Switzerland's only national park and the oldest national park in the Alps. It protects a strict wilderness area in the Engadine and Val Müstair region of Graubünden, near Zernez and the Ofen Pass.
For a broader overview of the park's history and geography, see the Swiss National Park Wikipedia page.
The park is managed with strong protection rules. Visitors must stay on marked paths, keep dogs out of the park, leave plants and natural objects in place, and follow official seasonal information. Check the official Swiss National Park site, walking routes and condition page, and protection regulations before planning a hike.
Top Hikes
These three hikes are good starting points for planning, with at least one more difficult option. Distances and elevation gain are rounded; check the official park trail page for current closures, permits, weather, and trail conditions.
Margunet Route (difficult) - 6.5 miles (10.4 km); elevation gain 2,200 feet (670 m). A classic marked route with alpine views and wildlife-viewing possibilities.
Alp Trupchun Route (moderate to difficult) - 8.7 miles (14.0 km); elevation gain 1,640 feet (500 m). A valley hike known for wildlife watching, especially during fall rutting season.
Macun Lakes Route (difficult) - 13.0 miles (21.0 km); elevation gain 3,937 feet (1,200 m). A long high-alpine route for experienced hikers in good conditions.
National Park Centre
The National Park Centre in Zernez is the main visitor hub for Swiss National Park. It provides exhibitions, information, route guidance, and current visitor details before entering the protected area.
Wildlife and Protection
Swiss National Park is known for ibex, chamois, red deer, marmots, bearded vultures, golden eagles, alpine plants, forests, and natural ecological processes. The park's strict rules are designed to let nature develop with as little human interference as possible.
Accommodation and Arrival
Use the official accommodation and arrival information for current access details, public transportation, parking, lodging, and nearby services. Zernez is the main gateway community for many visitors.
Webcam Notes
The Swiss National Park webcam cards use the official webcam images from Zernez. The park says its four webcams show current weather conditions in Zernez, including views from the National Park Centre, Castle Meadow, church steeple, and crossroads.
