Introduction
Berchtesgaden National Park protects high mountain landscapes in the Bavarian Alps near Koenigssee, Watzmann, Jenner, Hintersee, and the Austrian border. The park is Germany's only Alpine national park, with steep limestone peaks, deep valleys, forests, alpine meadows, lakes, and sensitive high-mountain habitats.
For broader background on the park's geography, history, and protected status, see the Berchtesgaden National Park Wikipedia page.
The official park site emphasizes safe mountain travel, staying on marked trails, following park rules, and planning around weather, snow, exposure, and route difficulty. The official webcam page, the Feratel Kehlstein live feed, and Berchtesgaden tourism webcams are useful for checking current visibility around the Eagle's Nest area, Jenner, Funtenseetauern, Hintersee, Koenigssee, and nearby mountain areas.
Top Hikes
These three hikes are good starting points for planning, with at least one more difficult option. Distances and elevation gain are rounded; check the official park trail page for current closures, permits, weather, and trail conditions.
Malerwinkel to Koenigssee Viewpoints (easy to moderate) - 2.5 miles (4.0 km); elevation gain 650 feet (200 m). A classic Koenigssee-area walk with lake and mountain views near the national park entrance.
Wimbachklamm to Wimbachgrieshuette (difficult) - 10.6 miles (17.0 km); elevation gain 2,300 feet (700 m). A long valley hike into the Wimbachgries with big mountain scenery and serious return distance.
Watzmannhaus Trail (difficult) - 8.1 miles (13.0 km); elevation gain 4,265 feet (1,300 m). A steep alpine route toward Watzmannhaus for fit hikers prepared for mountain conditions.
Official and Nearby Berchtesgaden Area Cams
The first camera card is the live Feratel Kehlstein feed near the Eagle's Nest area. The next five camera cards are official National Park webcam-page views: Funtenseetauern, Jenner Ost, Jenner Sued, Carl-von-Stahl-Haus, and Hintersee. These should be the best first checks for cloud cover, snow, and high-alpine visibility in or near the park.
The remaining camera cards are nearby Berchtesgaden Alps and Koenigssee views from regional webcam sources. They are labeled as nearby or regional so visitors can use them for weather and travel context without mistaking them for official National Park cameras.
Koenigssee, Jenner, and Watzmann
Koenigssee is one of the park's signature visitor areas, with boat access into a steep mountain lake corridor. Jenner offers broad views over Koenigssee and the surrounding Berchtesgaden Alps. Watzmann is one of Germany's best-known mountains, and hikes toward Watzmannhaus or the Wimbach valley require strong mountain preparation.
Rules and Safety
Use the official safety and rules pages before visiting. Important guidance includes staying on marked trails, keeping dogs on leash, avoiding drones, not camping or bivouacking, respecting wildlife quiet zones, and being prepared for sudden weather changes in steep alpine terrain.
